de vakbroeders: room to belong

Three immigrants, searching for “home” in a place that felt nothing like it. That’s how the project began for Sure, Santiago & Meric and now, they’re excited to share their first exhibition: a journey through belonging, captured on analog film. It’s their open love letter to Tilburg, an unconventional, kinda ugly, but surprisingly cool city that taught them to find beauty in unexpected corners. Come to see their perspective on Tilburg (&&& enjoy homemade Turkish side dishes & cakes!).

Sure

“Sure (@surekosulgan) discovered analog photography during an exchange period in the Netherlands, getting her first film camera along the way. A year later, she launched @filminbleu to share her perspective. In 2022, she moved to Tilburg from Istanbul and now she is navigating her life in a different culture through photography. She captures spontaneous details of urban life such as strangers in the streets, graffiti or balconies to find meaning in what often goes unnoticed. For her, analog photography is about intention and presence.”

Santiago

“Santiago (@santi.diaz.f) was born in Colombia and he grew up in Valencia, Spain. After he graduated in Food Science he decided to work in France in the countryside.
In this period he brought out his first photographic project named “Gironde 33″, exploring the life of a temporary worker and developing his personal touch. In 2020 he moved to the Netherlands and after a break, in 2023 he started to retake photography and he is currently working on different projects.”

Meric

“Meriç (@nzlmericckrv) is a visual designer who moved from Istanbul to Tilburg in 2022 to immerse herself in the art world. During her master’s in Performing Public Space, she created a participatory project mapping how newcomers from different cultural backgrounds perceive the city. Along the way, she met Sure and Santi, and together they explore Tilburg through the lens of belonging. She finds joy in walking, framing what catches her eye, and asking questions about her surroundings.”

de vakbroeder: lara van hoof

“Lara van Hoof works in Amsterdam and in her birthplace Tilburg as a director in theater and documentary. She starts from existential themes that she approaches in a humorous and honest way. Her own struggles are always a starting point, with the core being: how to deal with life? Lara coaches Sure and her team in the exhibition ‘Room to Belong’, in which they try to find a feeling of home in Tilburg. Lara encourages them to stay close to their personal story and search for beauty in the ugliness of the city.“
