growing new roots

Migration is a journey of roots; we come from the soil of our past, and we gather on the same ground today. Along the Way is a collective exhibition and community gathering shaped by three immigrant women on a shared quest for belonging. Searching for our roots in a new land, we realized that despite our different origins, we all come from the same earth at our core. Now, together, we are growing new roots. This collaboration brings together three unique perspectives on migration, identity, and the fluid meaning of belonging through photography, culinary memory and textile crafting.

Unwritten Recipes | brings people together around food and cultural exchange, using sensory experiences like taste and smell to create alternative paths to belonging through personal storytelling and culinary memories.

Spoken Portraits | connects these narratives through personal and collective stories, exploring our relationships with the spaces we inhabit.

A Temporary Home | a solo photography exhibition that captures visual reflections on the feeling of not belonging.

5pm | Doors open to welcome you to explore the art installations at your own pace. The exhibition remains open throughout the evening, so you can move freely between the artworks and the activities.

6:30pm | Craft Tellers’ Room: join the collaborative embroidery session around the shared table at the heart of De Nachtzuster. You are invited to stitch onto the black-and-white shadow photographs from A Temporary Home, reflecting on belonging, migration, memory, and the meaning of home.  As we craft together, Unwritten Recipes will guide the space using conversation prompts inspired by food, sensory memories, and personal histories. These prompts encourage storytelling and connection, inviting everyone to share the tastes, childhood scents, and emotional memories we carry from our pasts as we weave our stories together on this shared table.

8pm | The Craft Teller’s Room is followed by a Roundtable Discussion: Stories, Process & Belonging. Discuss the art projects you’ve experienced with us and the creative process that came along with it, the themes of home and identity and the stories that connect the different works. There is room for reflection and questions.

9:30pm | Closing Concert: a live musical performance, celebrating connection, listening and community.

unwritten recipes

Unwritten Recipes is a participatory art and social design project that explores culinary heritage, memory, and migration. Unwritten Recipes uses food as a universal language to connect Tilburg residents and build community ties. By focusing on the direct connection between the process of migration and food, the project uses sensory experiences like taste and smell to explore personal histories, share stories, and create alternative paths to belonging.

spoken portraits

Spoken Portraits is a creative journey where personal stories are transformed into visual and embroidered portraits. Over six months (July-December 2025), the project explored what it means to live in Tilburg, its diversity, multicultural layers, and the identities shaped through everyday encounters. In 2026 Spoken Portraits has been part of community encounters where people collectively finished the embroidery portraits.

a temporary home

A Temporary Home explores the uncomfortable side of the belonging process through analog photography, poems and cyanotype prints on textile. It focuses on the feeling of being stuck between two worlds: the temporariness of “home”, the shifting of identities, the constant effort of finding a space in another country, and the strange position of being a constant observer, a foreigner watching life from the outside when participation is constrained.
